San Antonio in Peril, Presenting Bricktown, Oklahoma

This is one of the cutest additions to a major city we have ever seen. There is literally something for everyone, families on mini trips,  lovers who need a weekend getaway,  bachelor and bachelorette parties,  business travelers that need a brief escape to recharge. Its all here!  What we found that makes Bricktown’s  river walk so unique is the changes that occur and atmosphere variations as you walk, scooter or river boat the trails. For a moment you are surrounded by restaurants and bars, the retail and boutique section turns one into a kid in a candy store. The Oklahoma river section gives off a true feel of the south, then onto the forested trail for a shady cool breeze experience.

5  Stars to the design team!

What was once a warehouse neighborhood, and the original site of the city, has been restored becoming the destination for Oklahomans looking for fun and entertainment.

-Before and After Restoration-

Notice the streets were dug out and flooded from the Oklahoma River to create what we now have as beautiful canals.

-Before and After Restoration-

Bricktown is the historic crossroads of commerce in Oklahoma City.  Four railroad companies, the Santa Fe, Rock Island, the Frisco and the Katy, chugged into Oklahoma City spurring economic development in the area.  The railroad shipped cotton, wheat, fruit, corn, cattle, horses and mules across the nation, helping to boost the farming industry in the state.

Later cars were included to the shipping list along with farm equipment and machinery.  Ford motor car company added a manufacturing plant shortly there after.

Bricktown is located on the southwest edge of Oklahoma City. The city is located in the center or the state just a short drive from all neighboring states.

Colorado and New Mexico to the east, Kansas to the north, Texas to the south with Missouri and Arkansas covering the east. Just a little over three hour drive from Shreveport Louisiana.

The first building boom began in 1898 and lasted until 1903.  With embellished doorways and arched windows these buildings were more ornate than a normal warehouse.  The second wave of warehouse construction in Bricktown lasted from 1903 until 1911, followed by a third generation of buildings which looked more like the warehouses we see today, big, tall buildings with long rows of windows and graphic signs.  While the styles of the buildings changed from 1898 to 1930 they all had one thing in common, the red brick.

Images from the canal walkways

Now, Bricktown is the place to be in Oklahoma City.  With turn of the century charm Oklahomans can stroll along the pedestrian canal, enjoy live music, cheer on their favorite sports team, sit down for some fine dining or dance the night away.

Along the banks of the canals you will also find activities for the kids and kids at heart. Beaches, Arcades, Playgrounds, Mii Golf and so much more.

Go north a quarter mile into Oklahoma City and be amazed at the parks and recreation areas. Above in the photos you can see the new convention center under construction and the massive water features that are almost completed. The kids are driving scooters through them.

We parked our car at the hotel we we arrived and never got back in until we headed back home. This city is very similar to Austin being very pedestrian encouraged. We own our scooters but you can grab one for use on every street corner.

Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark[7] opened in 1998 in downtown Oklahoma City‘s Bricktown Entertainment District, replacing All Sports Stadium. It is the home of the Oklahoma City Dodgers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles DodgersMajor League Baseball team. The park has seating for up to 13,066 fans and currently utilizes a seating capacity of 9,000 for Dodgers games.

The ballpark also hosts numerous other events both during and outside the baseball season. Those events include the Oklahoma High School Baseball Series in March, the snow tubing WinterFest November-January, a variety of community walks and runs, concerts, parties, corporate outings, meetings, seminars and more[11].

Accommodations / Hotels

Ok, after a few hours of research back home, for a hotel, we choose the Residence Inn by Marriott. This became our final choice due to it’s location. It sits on the North banks of the canal in the garden district.   Walk out the front door and your on your way to an afternoon of discovery. Unlike the San Antonio riverwalk where most hotels are directly on the water Bricktown is a bit different due to the fact the canals were built after the buildings were constructed. Its not an issue, you can get to the canals in just a few steps from anywhere, we just liked the idea of being on the waters edge.  We paid $122 per night and couldn’t be happier. Clean, Upbeat decor, Pool and Hot tub on the banks of the canal and very plesant staff throughout the establishment.

Are you Scared Of Flying

You Are Not Alone.

You Can Overcome It

Ok, the Caption has turned on the fasten your seatbelt light, your filled with sheer terror holding the arm rest in a death grip. What now!

You Are Not Alone
Studies have shown just under 50% of us have experienced some degree of anxiety when racing across the skies. In fact the National Institute of Mental Health has stated 6.5% of the population or 23 million of us experience overwhelming fear when airborne, it actually qualifies as a phobia.
This can be a real problem for those who refuse to fly outright. What if you have family overseas, perhaps a loved one becomes critically ill, miss out on that  once in a dream lifetime vacation, need to travel for work, etc… There are to many drawbacks. We all surfer from cognitive disorders, this means our minds can convince ourselves of things that are not true.. In the case of flying we are escalating our ability for emotional reasoning. In other words,
-what we feel must be true-
So we convince ourself the plane is unsafe so it must be true. The only conclusion you can get from this is an overestimation of a bad outcome without the ability of examining the facts. So the secret to overcoming these fears is to correct any misconceptions.
Feeling anxiety like we all do does not need to manifest into fear or danger.
Just concentrate on the facts. The chance of being in a fatal plane crash is 1 in 7 million. You are in more danger on the drive to the airport. As we covered in “4 out of 5 Of Us Will Be Eaten By Sharks This Year”  you are more likely to die from a falling coconut. Commercial airlines service their fleets 12 hours for every 12 hours in the air.   Its a fact.
Most of the fear we experience is the unknown.
A few years back flying into Memphis we noticed some condensation exiting the vent above us, a few moments later we hear a lady on the row behind us screaming for the flight attendant to alert her the plane was on fire. The attendant explained to her it was a combination of humidity outside and the cold air being generated on the interior of the plane. It took a good 15 minutes to calm her down. Asking questions can ease anxiety. Avoidance keeps our fears alive. The more that we avoid flying, the more we reinforce the idea that flying is dangerous. Repetition is a great way to reset one’s mind. From an evolutionary perspective, this quick activation system is necessary to react to immediate life or death. All one needs are a few calm standard successful flights and you are well on the road to recovery.  Therapy is always a great option for those of us that have trouble letting go of our fear.
Hoping this brings comfort!
And Now For Something Completely Different!
A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking.  Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and therefore we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax — OH MY GOD!” Silence followed and after a few minutes, the Captain came back on the intercom and said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m so sorry if I scared you earlier, but while I was talking, the flight attendant brought me a cup of coffee and spilt it in my lap. You should see the front of my pants! A passenger in Coach said, “That’s nothing, he should see the back of mine!”
Happy Travels!
