Devil’s Den, Near Tampa, Florida

DEVIL’S DEN IN FLORIDA

This underground spring got its name from early settlers who saw steam rising to the surface from a sinkhole.

Devil’s Den is formed by a karst window, in which the roof over a subterranean river has collapsed, exposing the water to the open surface, near Williston, Florida. It is privately owned, and operated as a SCUBA diving training and recreational facility. The water in the underground river is a constant 72 °F degrees.

The warm spring water mixed with the winter air caused the steam to rise, thus the name “Devil’s Den” was given and it has stuck ever since.

Due to the cave conditions, the clear water is always a perfect 72 degrees. As the temperate water evaporates into the ambient air, it emits steam which likely inspired the cave system’s name.

On cold winter mornings you can see steam, like smoke, rising from the chimney opening.  Thus, the early settlers gave the name Devil’s Den.  With crystal clear water, year round 72 degree water temperatures,  ancient rock formations with stalactites, fossil beds dating back 33 million years, and much more, you’re guaranteed to leave with memories that will last a lifetime!

Snorkeling and scuba gear are available to rent. Neither crocodiles or alligators reside in Devil’s Den, just a few fishes and a turtle named Nelson.

There are, however, ancient rock formations, 33-million-year-old fossil beds, and stalactites.

With a maximum depth of 54 feet, Devil’s Den Spring offers ancient rock formations that date back 33 million years. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy fantastic views inside crystal clear water that remains a cool 72 degrees year-round.
