Jekyll Island GA -A Hidden Paradise –

Hurry Up and Do Nothing, this seems to be the vibe you feel on this beautiful eastern US island paradise.

Jekyll Island’s history begins some 3,500 years ago. Prior to British colonization, the islands first inhabitants were Native Americans.

Jekyll Island is one of the Golden Isles of Georgia. This barrier island, located just south of Saint Simons Island, is connected by bridge to the mainland near Brunswick, GA. It’s a magical place combining the southern charm of oak trees and Spanish moss with the tropical feel of palm trees and the beautiful Jekyll Island beaches.

If you’re anywhere near the Atlantic coast of Georgia, Jekyll Island is a perfect day trip. It’s just a short drive from I-95 but it feels like you’ve escaped the hustle and bustle. There are so many recreational activities to explore on Jekyll Island. It makes a perfect vacation spot to come back to every year!

General James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia in 1733, and along with it, Jekyll Island. The island was named for Sir Joseph Jekyll, a financial supporter of the colony.

Jekyll Island was purchased in 1886 by a group of wealthy families as a private retreat. By 1900, The Jekyll Island Club membership included the Rockefellers, Morgans, Cranes and Goulds and represented over one-sixth of the world’s wealth.

The Club closed in 1942 and Jekyll Island was purchased by the State of Georgia in 1947.

FISHING OFF JEKYLL ISLAND

Bend a Rod at Jekyll Island. Georgia’s coastal jewel offers a variety of saltwater angling opportunities. Bottom fishing is the most productive and commonly used fishing technique for shore-based saltwater fishing. If fishing from the piers, bridges or beaches on Jekyll, expect to catch trout, redfish and flounder.

Catching Crabs on Jekyll Island is Easy Family Fun – and Good Eating, Too!

All you need to feast high during your stay is some inexpensive equipment and the proper technique. And it helps not to be squeamish – crabs are ugly buggers (their mamas might not think so, though). They’re easy to catch, however, and for some reason kids seem to love bringing up a mess of crab critters.

Georgia Crab Catching Regulations –

Make sure you have a valid Georgia fishing license. You can get one at Maxwell’s General Store (located in the Beach Village) or at the Jekyll Fishing Center (located at the Clam Creek Picnic Area).

Crab season is open year-round (unless otherwise designated), and at any time of the day or night.
