NOT THIS ONE….
The Catskill Mountains are located in southeast New York State, between Albany and New York City. …
In addition to breathtaking natural attractions like waterfalls and scenic vistas.
The Catskill Mountains are also famous for its number of maintained hiking trails, ski resorts, lakes, and rivers for visitors to explore.
The Catskills served as the setting for Baby and Johnny’s memorable summer in Dirty Dancing, but the Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, Virginia, was the actual filming location for the resort.
History of The Roxbury Motel
The breathtaking beauty of the region and their close proximity to New York City have made the Catskill Mountains a popular destination for travelers since the nineteenth century. The first major wave of visitors began when railroads were built, connecting the Catskills with steamships and trains that ran between New York City and Rondout (near Kington, New York). The rails reached Stratton Falls in 1871 and were extended to Roxbury the next year. Following the Great Depression and mirroring the ease of travel by automobile, a second wave tourism began after the Second World War and extending into the 1960s. The latter was primarily to the “Borscht Belt,” where luxury resorts spawned a generation of famous comedians and entertainers.
History of Stratton Falls
For generations the waterfall has cast its spell. The glistening cascade flowing past millennia-old rock formations never fails to transport visitors into another world: the realm of The Roxbury at Stratton Falls.
Enjoy Both Properties During Your Stay
The Roxbury breaks the mold a bit.
The colonial house might put you in mind of a bed and breakfast, and the adjoining motel building is a low-profile pre-modernist classic.
Rooms, however, are anything but traditional, with design themes that range from the vibrant and contemporary to the flamboyantly retro.
The idea here, clearly, is not minimalism but a sort of maximalism, throwing the usual boutique clichés out the window.
Plenty of hotels call themselves “playful,” but few have anything that even begins to approach something like the Roxbury’s Archeologist’s Digs suite, with its secret passageways,
its Mayan Temple–inspired bedroom, its fish swimming in a saltwater aquarium alongside the glass-walled shower, and more than a few details that are simply beyond description.
At the same time, the Roxbury honors the boutique-hotel conventions that really matter.
Bathrooms are stocked with top-shelf bath products and Egyptian cotton towels, while the bedrooms are fitted with all the proper technology.
And no country escape these days is complete without a spa, in this case a need that’s more than adequately fulfilled by the Shimmer Spa.
It’s a perfect country bolthole for a weekend in, or a base for exploring the outdoors of upstate New York — one thing it’s not is a traditional old-style Catskills resort.
– The Roxbury at Stratton Falls –
The entire property, from the Crooked Cabana Spa to the smaller, unexpected nooks, is adorned with textured wall paper and intricate tile work, all begging you to feel your way around each corner.
From the furniture to the fixtures, the bedspreads to the bathrooms, the Roxbury Experience is taken to the next level in rooms called The Pampered Postmaster, The Superhero Incognito, and Cinderella’s Gown.
In the room called Dracula’s Fangs, there is a chandelier that contains actual dried bats, an example of the types of details guests have come to know and love from this team.
Their commitment to the theme is palpable, and makes staying in these rooms a true adventure with details to discover and appreciate throughout the entire stay.
Imagine if Alice in Wonderland married Willy Wonka and set up residence in Oz. THAT’s what we want The Roxbury Experience to be.
The Catskill Mountains are located in southeast New York State, between Albany and New York City. The region is a mixture of public and private land that lies within the 700,000 acres of the Catskill Park and occupies parts of four counties: Sullivan, Delaware, Greene, and Ulster.
The mountains, streams, lakes, and valleys of the Catskills contain a virtual plethora of both outdoor and indoor activities and attractions.
just relaxing in a tranquil setting, the Catskills are being re-discovered as one of the country’s premiere four-season retreats. And The Roxbury Motel and The Roxbury at Stratton Falls are located in the heart of where it is all happening.
Spa & Pool at the Crooked Cabana
The idea behind the Crooked Cabana came from taking the architecture of the 1848 Italianate Mansion on the property and literally “skewing” and “twisting” it to create a whimsical experience for our guests to look at while lounging by the swimming pool or strolling around the property.
A much larger building than it looks like on the outside, it is not only a pool cabana, but it also boasts an 8-person hot tub, a dry sauna, a spa relaxation area, two spa treatment rooms, three bathroom/changing rooms, and a large recreation room with TV area, conference table for 14, gaming area, and bar.
We had so many big dreams for the grand opening of this building and its facilities, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are forced to limit its facilities for everyone’s safety.
Hours of operation and guidelines for our Stratton Falls pool and spa facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic are as follows (PLEASE NOTE THE SWIMMING POOL IS CLOSED FOR WINTER AND WILL RE-OPEN IN MAY 2021):
Perhaps the days will return again when they can offer their extensive continental breakfast buffets in our lobbies. Breakfast Bags are available from 8:00 – 11:00am. Trails & Falls
Two years in the making by the expert trailblazing team at Tahawus Trails (who have pioneered new trails at locations like Niagara Falls, NY and the Appalachian Trail), the trail system of The Roxbury at Stratton Falls allows its hikers to easily access the base of the Stratton Falls waterfall.
But it is so much more than just that. Viewing the video and photos on this page will give you an idea of the many adventures one encounters while walking this easy pathway and its two waterfall observation decks, sitting and lounging areas, beautiful rustic black locust, cedar, and stone staircases, high mossy walls of multiple-millenia-old rock formations, forested nooks, and fairy-tale-esque tree groupings.
It was actually this area of the property that was the total inspiration for building our Tower Cottages with their architectural homage to fairy tale villages.
ENJOY THE CATSKILLS!
